Morphological Study on the Lumbar Sympathetic Ganglia in Korean

Abstract
The lumbar part of the sympathetic trunk and their connections in man has received an increasing amount of attention from both an anatomical viewpoint and the pathogenesis and treatment of many diseases, particularly those of the blood vessels. Its surgical removal has been carried out in several different disease states with varying degrees of success.
Previous investigators have made considerable contributions to the understanding of the topography of the lumbar part of the sympathetic nerves. Particularly, Cowley and Yeager (1949), Lowenberg and Morton (1951) and Pick (1957) have made contributions to the surgical anatomy of the lumbar part of the sympathetic trunks. And the study of Kuntz and Alexa¡þnder(1950) has contributed to an understanding of the lumbar sympathetic pathways.
The recent textbooks of the anatomy are agreed on the usual position and on the number of the chain ganglia in 2 to 6 of the lumbar part of the sympathetic trunk.
Perlow and Vehe (1935) have reported I to 6 in number of the chain ganglia, and Pick and Sheehan (1946) have observed 2 to 6 of the chain ganglia in the lumbar part of the sympathetic trunk.
The present study was investigated to observe the frequency, the location and the rami communicantes of the lumbar sympathetic ganglia in 65 cadavers in Korean. The results of the study are as follows:
1. The number of the sympathetic chain ganglia in the lumbar part varied from 2 to 6, and the most frequent incidence was 40.9% in number of 5 ganglia.
2. The length of the sympathetic ganglia in the lumbar part was 15.32¡¾5.87mm and width was 5.17¡¾1.75mm in average, respectively.
3. The occurrence of the lowest white rami communicantes was observed as far as the 4th lumbar spinal nerve, and the most frequent incidence was 41.6% in the 2nd lumbar nerve.
